Temp. gauge bounces all over

Well I went to work this morning and was barely 2 minutes away from my house when my temp gauge started bouncing around eratically. I mean it was bouncing all over the place way past 260 and back down again all within a couple seconds. Where do I start. Theres no way the car was overheating somethings screwed up though. Also, when the car is in park the temp gauge is way past 260 but when i press the brake it shoots down to where it actually is!?! Any help is appreciated.

i had the exact same problem in my camaro. i put an afco aluminum radiator in and a high flow aluminum water pump and it never did it again. i think your problem lies in that your water pump does not move the coolant through the radiator fast enough, and considering that the cooling system is closed loop and the longer coolent stays in the radiator, the longer it stays in the engine getting hotter, you should get the coolant moving faster. it could very well be air in the cylinder head coolent passages, and you might be getting a false temp reading, or simply a localized hot spot.

Started looking around and found my temp. wire between plugs 1 & 3 was burned up pretty bad. Gonna replace the sensor and wire and see what happens. I dont think my problem is because its overheating, I think my sensor is jacked.

Update. Checked the wire that goes to the temp. sensor and it was melted along with my o2 sensor. Fixed the wire and temp gauge now reads fine.

So, it was the temp sensor and the pigtail wire that plugs into it? Or the o2 sensor itself/ or the o2 sensor wire also? ...I just had the same problem. I got a new temp sensor, and now my temp guage doesn't work at all....?
