My Fans work weird, whats wrong???

Transmission: 5 speed
Axle/Gears: 3.08 Posi 10 Bolt w/ aluminum drums
My Fans work weird, whats wrong???
my primary fan comes on when I turn the key on, and then shuts off after about 5 minutes of running.
shouldnt it stay off until it hits a certain temp, and then turn on??
is the fan bad, or is it the relay??
I am assuming that there is only 1 way to wire up the fan, using the GM connectors, and the wiring appears to be un-molested.
