Almost overheating problems..
Hey guys my 87 GTA I have only had for about 3 months gets up to like 240 and it only goes to 260 and the fans don’t kick on tell about 220 but by the time they kick on my car just jumps up hotter, I was going to replace the thermostat or should I just manually wire the fans to a switch and turn them on myself? I don’t really want to do that but I may have to, it gets WAY to hot and its only like 65-75 degrees outside right now and I only drive it maybe 20 miles and it gets that hot? kinda of of bad!
a little help please?
Thank you

your fans are workin the way they should (kick on at 225) so the issue is something else. have you checked your coolant? it might be low. if its not that you might need to replace the water pump and or thermostat

fan switch
dont bother running a switch just wire the fan to your ignition. Soon as you turn the key the fan turns on. Soon as you turn off the car and take the key out of the ignition the fan will automatically turn off. This is what i did as I was scared I might forget to turn in on sometime and cause damage to my motor cause of it. I never have problems anymore. Also you may want to check the wiring to the fan to see if it is okay; no loose connections, no cuts in wire, that it is not grounding out.
Hope this helps you. If you wire your fan to your ignition you wont have a problem with the fan turning on/off again.

Just a little caution here. Wiring fan directly to ignition can be a problem if fan has enough draw to blow ignition fuse. Should not be done without relay in path. Wire the RELAY operate path directly to grd on one side and ignition on accesory fuse on other. Turn key, operates relay, relay has 12 sitting on one contact and passes it to the fan which is grounded on other terminal. Fans have plugs that can be reused. The factory relay can be reused if it works right. The fuse you wire to on the fuse panel ought to be heavy enough to add one little relay, but may not hold up for fan motor.
Yes fan is turning on at correct temp, but you must have a problem and perhaps check to air flow to the front first. Anything got a lot of dirt, leaves, bugs, on the outside, like the air conditioning "radiator" right in fron of the coolant, radiator??
Fan temperature turn on can be changed by changing switch that controls relay path for factory wiring. 160 and 185 units are also available. I would NOT use the lowest one. You should use a 185 for best all around driving. A 160 ought o give you more overheating problems of a different sort.
A high, or sticking thermostat may also be present. Using a 185 thermostat and replacing yours will help also.
NOTE. If your radiator is still hot 24 hours later.... well no more silly comments. I can thnk of a million right here, but if it truly was, then someone has the keys to your car and drove it within an hour before you touched it.
