Running to cool???

Hi everyone I've read through all the posts and can't seem to find anyone that is running too cool!! hehe, I am in canada and it's relatively cold up here I have dual electric fans with a sensor that turn's them on automatically, and a manaul switch for when my tranny start's getting warm in traffic, the cooler is 30,000 lbs cooler woohoo, tranny runs really cooooool, but most day's my motor doesn't get up too 100 or even close to 100 so the fan almost NEVER comes on, I'm going to change the thermostat for sure they are really cheap and make sure that there is a 195 in there, which I'm sure it is now, if my heater core is plumbed wrong could this be keeping the engine too cool? I'm not sure if the heater core lines are somehow bypassing the thermostat houseing or what not, any recomendations' would be great thanks, BTW it's an 85 berlineta with 305 and all the z ground fx carburated

Heater core routing will not bypass the theromostat so no worrys there. Your idea about the thermostat being the culprit sounds like the most logical place to start. If it is a newer design it will stick open if it fails and that coupled with the very low outdoor temps you most likely are experiancing could eaisly be the problem. I live in michigan and we have been having some very cold nights. My car usually runs hot and the night air keeps my well under the 195 mark.

The heater core will not have an effect on running too cool or not as it draws the coolant that has already passed through the engine and returns it either to the engine or the radiator, depending on what engine you are looking at.

The thermostat (being stuck open) is about the only thing in the entire cooling system that will cause the coolant not to warm up to operating temps.

Wooohooo

This is definatly going to be one of my favorite boards I love my car to death and will have it for a long time, thanks a TON for the repsonse's, a 195 thermostat cost me 6.95 Canadian and I'll definatly post my finding's, I've had one of the failsafe thermo's in there, and it was stuck open within a week, hopefully the one that's in there isn't stuck open, if it is I can look forward to some better fuel mileage for sure, I'll post some pics of my 85, the vin say's its a berlinetta I'm sure, but it has ground effects and a roof console, a fiberglass hood, MSD 6a box, MSD GM Coil (42,000v I think), curve kit in the dist (if I put light springs I have to retardd quite a bit to avoid lash), 2 10" JL audio's, JL 500/1 amp, junker 6x9's and some 5 1/4's in the dash, rockford deck, Red light's all over the place, AC removed, dual electric fans, which will keep the engine colder then the south pole, specially with these thermostat prob's , some new Balljoints, i'm getting a tranny from a 93 caprice cuz this one is starting to slip, I have a tranny temp gauge and a 30,000 lbs cooler in it, a air damn off of a cavalier with a 3 inch metal extender which hits the ground everytime I come outa a gas station , thanks again for the response's, sorry if i'm babbling I've had a couple brew, btw I got this car for 500 bux canadian off of one of my GF's Stupid buddy's hehehe I was laughing quite a bit I love this thing, and that's her in the pic little bit of snow, but it does better then my lifted truck!!!
