BIT OF A PROBLEM
Ive just fitted my new digital temp guage and works great, but ive disconected the old temp guage wire from the sensor and after running the engine for 5 min or so the "CHECK ENGINE" light apears. I did try and connect the old gauge up to the senor with the new guage but the new guage didnt like it very much. any idea how to by-pass it? tried grounding it but the light still comes on.

You've taken out the coolant temperature sensor for the ECM, not the coolant temperature sender for the gauge.

Yank the sender from the driver side cylinder head. Put whatever one you removed back where it was (sounds like you yanked the CTS from the intake).
