Fan stops, AC quits cooling, then engine overheats?

I seem to be having an intermediate problem with the fan not coming on, I'll be sitting in traffic or just idling and all of a sudden the AC will quit blowing cold air, then the temp gauge will start climbing till it overheats unless I start giong down the road to get some air flowing through the radiator, I've replaced the fan relay and it didn't correct the problem, could the pressure switch on the AC be the problem? Do I have to purge the system to change that? Any other problem areas I should look at? This never happens UNLESS the AC is on to begin with, this is on my 92 RS by the way.

All I can say is this: Go over all your wiring and grounds for the A/C and fan system. Make sure none of the wires and grounds are corroded. It sounds like something is lose or is shorting out. Maybe it's your HVAC controls, as it overrides the cooling fan.

There are several grounds on the passanger side near the radaitor support.

Also, on the back of the block there are several grounds. Feel around with yours hands for loose wires.

It sure sounds like an intermintant ground.

What youre' saying is the fan will come on normally when you don't use your A/C.I would agree on going thru your wiring both the grounds and supply side.I'm assuming on the '92 RS there's only the single cooling fan.The A/C low pressure switch can be replaced without opening the system. The high pressure switch, which is the one that is in the fan circuit,I don't remember if you can remove it without doing an evac on the system. The high pressure switch could be bad or you could have high head pressure(overcharge situation)is the reason the A/C compressor would be cycling off.

Thanks for the tips, I've checked all the grounds I could locate, still doesn't work, how do you check the pressure switchs to see if they are bad? Do you just use a jumper at the wiring connection? And I have jumped the fan directly and it works fine.

Ok. I got it fixed, it turned out to be just a bad fan motor that would work sometimes and not others, I took it out for a close inspection and noticed it had bad bearings and lots of junk falling out of it. Just bought a replacement and it seems to work fine now.
