where to buy mech. fan shroud?
where to buy mech. fan shroud?
I have an '89 TBI 305 IROC and want to convert to mech. fan from electric. I have determined that I need a 17" blade and I believe I need a 1.5" spacer (flexfan) - But I cant find anywhere that sells a fan shroud. Can anyone tell me where to get an aftermarket shroud that will fit this car, or can I buy a stock one somewhere by cross-referencing a different year? maybe a salvage yard? also, am I right on fan/spacer size?
I am not worried about HP loss with a mech. fan, I didn't buy this car to be the fastest, just the most reliable.

82 to 85 or 86 were mechanical on LG4 305
read the thread in this board titled 'if you own an 84 or 85 or 86'
i also agree about the power drag of a mechanical fan its nothing you can ever notice on a daily driver
electric is overrated
my 82 is staying stock mechanical i know, in which is factory for it
it would be easiest to use stock fan and shroud really
parts wanted board

UDlooz the 1-1/2" you mention is the length of the clutch from it's mounting face,to the water pump,to the mounting flats for the fan itself.
The reasons I switch to the dual electric fan setup from my clutch driven heavy duty was taking the weight off the water pump(extending the life of the pump and the belt - in theory). It cleans up the engine bay.And when the tempatures are cool the fans aren't running.
And none of fans serve any purpose at steady state speeds above 45mph(provided you have a airdam in place).

Yeah, dual electric would be nice, but the previous owner hosed up all the wiring and the fan is wired to come on with the ignition now. Frankly, I don't want to mess with tracing and redoing all the wiring to return it to stock. alot of mechanics have told me a flexfan will cool better than an electric, I know it takes up a lot of space but it will be an easy install.

well, if you are stuck on the mech fan and havent purchased a flex fan yet, get me a PM i have a flexalite 17" flex fan i have no use for CHEAP!!
I had dual stock fans, they are ok on some peoples cars (stock). I currently have a single 2-speed f*rd fan that kicks major *** and it works great
good luck

Your'e right about the Ford fan Forshock(say that fast 3 times LOL).I have a 2 speed electric fan out of a Taurus(the MK Vlll's is even better)but until I upgrade the alternator from the 85 amp to handle it I'll stick with the dual fan GM setup.
UDLooz if you wanted to keep your electric fan you have the option of using an afternarket relay/temp sensor like a Derale or Hayden unit. This way you could bypass the factory controls if the PO made such a mess of them.Just another option to think about.
