Newbie to AC question

Newbie to AC question

Hello everyone!

I've never worked on an AC system before. Mine is out and it is getting quite hot

The connector is completely broken off my AC compressor. As a result, I need to get a new compressor to fix this problem. However, I have never replaced
one of these before. If I disconnect the lines going to the compressor, will all the freon leak out? Is there any special tools or tricks needed?

FYI - A few years ago, mine was converted to the new freon.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Yes you will lose the freon. If you are friends with a local shop have them reclaim the freon first. As for the compressor its an easy swap, just remove the lines and plug with something, I use black tape on occasion. Pour ALL the oil out of the compressor into a measuring cup, then put the same amout into the new compressor. I prefer using new oil, but what ever you do use the SAME TPYE of oil that came out of the old unit. Some oils are not compatable so why chance it. Install the compressor using o-rings, make all the connections including the belt you removed and have the shop evacuate and charge. Not sure how much freon to put back in but shop will know due to the sticker that was placed on your car when it was coverted before.Good Luck and stay cool.

If you get a new compressor, I wouldnt worry about adding oil. The compressor should be sealed and already have oil. If it was changed out professionally, it will have a new compesssor designed for 134. If not you will need to replace oil, accumulator and compressor.
