88 w/305&tpi cooling problem in FL!

first i thought it was the thermostat so I just removed it. well, i had pressure and heat in upper and lower hoses. the check engine light came on, right around 210 degrees. the fan did decide to come on (electric) for a few minutes the other day but it seems intermittent. it did not come on at all today even at 230. Yikes! yeah i know almost cooked it... such is the joy of discovering problems.

could the car really run above 230 degrees because of the fan not working? or is my water pump working but not hard enough? also, the coolant temp sensor... can't find it in the manual. is that the plug in device near the thermostat on the intake?
lovely problem to have in central fla. 93degrees in the shade. mellow. :-)

thanks!

you need to have a t-stat otherwise your not cooling your engine. what ends up happening is the collant is flying by so fast that it doesnt have enough time to actually absorb the heat and in essence your coolant my be 160 or so but your block is like 240, possibly even higher.
my advice put the t-stat back in if you want your motor to last.
but thats just my 2 cents take it as you will.
also my friends 89 rs caught fire when he didnt have a t-stat.

yes the car can run at 230 withought the fan but it will ususally overheat if the fan doesnt work.
also yes the coolant temp sensor that the computer uses is located in the t-stat housing (or at least near it).

as for the fan comming on intermittently try setting the hvac control to ac max and see if your fan comes on with that.
