car running hot

got a new temp gauge started working fine. now i have a problem with it not cooling down. It runs and gets to 220 the middle mark and wont cool down and will go all the way up to 240 almost in the red and will sit there and then if i keep driving it stays up and if i sit there for a while and idle it will go back down to 220 what is keeping it so hot? what can i replace to fix it and keep it at a cooler temp. have a 180 thermostat in there and fans kick on. thanks

possibly thermostat.

I had this problem on my sons 86 iroc. I done a quick fix with his. I cut the insides out of the thermostat with a pair of wire cutters leaving the center open! CAR RUNS COOL ALL OF THE TIME NOW. aprox 160 170 range. Some might not agree with this but I gaurantee you wont have a over heating issue to deal with!! (no worry about thermostat sticking) UNLESS YOUVE GOT OTHER PROBLEMS?! bad radiator, water pump, fan exc.

I have a problem with cooling too. The engine doesn't seem to get hot but the interior of the car gets hot real quick, does anyone know the cause of this?

This same thing happend to me. I was thinking either the water pump or the thermostat. So I did some praying haha took it to the shop, thank god it was only thermostat, got a new one and I was good to go. Thermostat is probably stuck, It's usually the case. but if it's the water pump you could be in some trouble. I might be wrong I don't know much about cars, just what im told. Hope this helps.

when i used to overheat, my machinist told me to drill a few 1/8th inch holes in the thermostat.. and its been workin fine for me.. but i have a flex-a-lite, full-time electric, and a massive aluminum radiator.. runs at 170 in 85 degree weather.. sometimes even 165.. in traffic, never passes 180..

also try, flushing your radiator and block.. water pump might be gone too.. but i would flush the radiator and block first.. its the cheapest and easiest.. then check to see if the thermostat is working by placing it in a pot of warm water, then fire up the stove and see if it opens when the water is boiling.. replace if necessary.. if its good, drill the holes too.. more waterflow..
