cooling fan?

Hey guys i got a cooling fan problem.

the fan will not turn on
The fuse is good.
When i unplug the connector on the fan and jumper it to ground and power it turns on.
Im not real familar with these cars. do they have a relay. and i never noticed before but are they suppose to run all the time or do they have there own thermostat? If so were are these located?

Where should i go i really need to get these taken care of.

my car started runnin up around 240 so i stopped and looked and the fan was not on. so it just started. i figured jut a faulty part or soemthing. any help would be appreciated. thanks

If it's a single fan it works like this. There is a relay on the driver side above the brake booster. There should be a bracket with two relays. The inner one is typically the fuel pump (I think?) and the outer one is the cooling fan relay. Just to be sure its the one with a large red, large black, small green/white and small black wires going into it. Unplug the connector and carefully jumper the terminals for the two largest wires (red and black). This should activate the fan. When you jumper them be swift about connecting something so it doesn't arc, the fan draws a lot of amps when its just starting up. If you let it arc you could foul up the connector which is bad.

If the fan doesn't kick on: Its probably the fusible link, usually in one of the front two corners of the car, maybe by the battery. Its a small block with a (30?) amp fuse. Check it out, see if anything fishy is going on.

If the fan does come on: Then you need to try and ground the green/white wire, and see if that also turns on the fan. This will verify the relay is working. If no fan you have a bad relay. If it does kick on then the problem lies elsewhere.

It's very likely it's one of these two things. Check and post up the results. Even if one if these DOES fix your fan there are some other things you should check, like, why is it blowing relays? If it happens more than once you have somewhat of a problem and need to investigate further, possibly resulting in needing a new fan motor.

I kept blowing relays and my connector got all melted and toasted. I tested the fan motor by putting an Amp-meter's prongs in the two terminals, closing the circuit. It drew 28 amps as it was starting to spin and tapered off to about 12. My new fan motor starts up at around 24 amps and tapers off to about 10, so I figure that small change was enough to justify a "bad" fan motor. I also soldered in a new connector from a junk car that wasn't toasted and I just used the relay that came with it instead of wasting another $20 on a stupid relay. Hasn't acted up at all. A fan hot-wired to be on all the time could cause it to wear out faster. You should get it so it's only running when its needed, either a stock setup (you will want to get a fan switch with a lower temperatures for the head, you can get them online easily, stock temperatures are simply crazy and wont turn the fan on till the thing damn near over heats) or wire a manual fan switch for the interior.

post up what you find!

switch

last night i grounded the wire goin to the fan switch in the passenger head and it turned on. so today i went and got a new switch, hooked it up let the car run and it warmed up to 240 and still it did not kick on. the fan will come on when i hot wire it. it will come on when i jumper the two big wires in the relay and when i ground that wire out goin to the switch on the head. whats this mean? where else could i go?

what kind of car would have lower temp switch?

If i take that plug off the switch on the head and ground it with ignition on the fan comes on along with if i have the ac on.

So if the ONLY thing it can be is a switch, is it possible that i just bought a bad switch cuz i just let it get up to about 150 and it still didnt kick on.

If so what car has a lower temp switch maybe around 200?

you can buy aftermarket ones from summit or jegs, or i remember hearing that a stock buick GN switch will work but im not 100% sure on that one, it comes on with the AC at all times, id also recomend a 170* t-stat ACDelco part number 10220957

Are the contacts in good shape on the fan switch connector? Can you eliminate the possibility of the connector not making contact with the metal inside the fan switch?

Hmm just a thought but id hook a second temp guage up to youre engine to see what it is actualy running at, it sounds like the guage in youre dash is a bit off target.

I just installed flexalite dual low profile fans on my car Sunday. Motor temp has been awesome, its only been around 35 degrees here lately. But it never got hotter than 160 while fan was on. Which is a whole lot better than how it was running before. It was over heating on me at stops and was running about 240 on the highway with cruise on. Tonight will be a good test for it since i gotta go out of town with it.

Well mine has adjustable thermostat. Can set it from 180-240 degrees. I also wired it to a switch to turn it on whenever. I have been running mine full time because my car runs great when its running cool. I don't think it would hurt to run them full time, they should be made to last.

I have 2, one i run all the time the other is running off the factory wiring so it comes on at about 190'F.
So it runs cool BUT if it needs the second fan it has got it.

It workes quite well for me, on a 37'C day it never passed 220'F and that is going up hill
