Oil Leak - $$

Seems the oil leak I have in my 1992 Camaro Z28 is 2 or more seals.

2 mechanics (2 different shops) has suspected the Rear Main Seal and oil pan.. to start with..

What kind of $$ am I looking at for this? I am being told they have to lift the engine just to get at the oil pan seal??

not sure what a shop would charge but to get the oil pan off u have to raise the engine a few inchs up and normally its a good idea to pull the dist to avoid contact with the firewall, to do the rear main they would have to pull the tranny. Why are u posting this in the cooling section?

There are 2 ways to fix the rear main seal.
1) remove the trans and replace the seal
2) Remove the engine and replace the seal.

There is probably a few ways to replace the oilpan gasket. The first would be to raise the engine a little and then pull the cover off, the other would be to completely remove the engine.

The rear main seal is common to go out on the Chevy engine, thats why they changend it to the one piece style in 86 or 87 depending on your source of info. The 1 piece was an improvement, but not a cure.

Depending on how bad it is leaking I would let it leak for now, if you are planning on installing a new engine, or rebuilding an engine that will be the best time to do it. If you need to drop your trans for any reason, thats the best time to do the rear seal. I know that the rear seal is about $500 or so installed. If you have a trans rebuilt its only $900 to $1200 and they can fix the rear seal for around $50 at that time. As long as you keep oil in the engine you should be ok and DO NOT LET IT RUN DRY.

Good luck.

John

Re: Oil Leak - $$

I actually had the same issue with my oil pan (oil leak) It took the mechanics about and hour to lift the engine and remove the oil pan. It cost $250 dollars to get it done plus I replaced my oil pump since they removed the pan. They just removed the engine mounts and they had the engine up and was able to get to the oil pan easily.
