RTV Silicone around thermostat housing?

Do i need to put RTV Silicone on both sides of the thermostat gasket, or just the top, or what? I just replaced the gasket and put the silicone on the top of the gasket only and tightened the bolts correctly... after letting the silicone dry overnight, coolant was leaking out of the termostat area the next day.

Clean the surface, put some RTV on your finger and rub in neatly on the bottom flange on the manifold portion. Lay down the paper gasket, then cover the top portion the same way. Drop the outlet on and torque it. After it cures you will be leak free.
