running fan off toggle switch?
Hey
I have had problems overheating, but its not atm but it runs damn hot. My mechanic told me just to put in a toggle switch to the fan, so once i start driving to turn it on instead of letting the engine get to hot... it used to get upwards of 300*+ and yes, i have aftermarket gauges. I have searched, and came up with pretty much nothing so does anyone know of any sort of diagram or thread where its been done?
ps its a 305ci HO L69

that doesnt sound normal to be gettin taht hot, and those temps are very bad for the motor.
these motors typically are designed to run hot, like fans turn on at 220ish and 240ish. but over 240 for any period of time is no good.
first i'd look into the cooling system you have now, such as your radiator and make sure the fans are turning on at some point
Check the stickies at the top of the cooling section...some good information in there
you'll have to find the fan relays and run a wire to a ground source thru a switch..so when u turn on the switch , it grounds the fan relay and turns the fan on.
i did this to my 89 Irocz and placed the toggle switch on the panel below the cigarette lighter. i had a empty space there and just drilled the hole and mounted the switch.
the mod works well tho. you can turn the one fan on at any time you like. before in the summer and idling, it would climb to 230's. now with the switch on all the time, it barely hits 200 degrees.
Now i got a 170 degree thermostat, and with the switch it doesnt go over 170 degrees, and mostly stays at like 150-160... abit low for my taste. i might go back to a 180 tstat
that be my next mod for you...a slightly lower T-stat will really bring those temps down

You must not have searched enough. I think I even showed you how to do it.. The green wire going into the fan relay, which is located on the firewall by the brake booster. Splice into that wire and run it to a switch and then to ground.
Then turn the key on when the engine is cold and make sure the fan is actually coming on. Search 'fan switch' if you need more.
But you shouldnt be having problems with this right now. Especially in calgary. Check your thermostat and such. You dont have a bubble in the coolant, do you? Stock, original radiator?

no its in storage right now, but in the summer is when i was having the huge problems thats when i got a new rad, but that didnt do anything and ive flushed it 2 times since. Also in the summer i put a new 195 in it, didnt do anything so i put a 180 in it and still was overheating, my fan was turning on once i got around 260ish but by then it was to late and the temp still shot up. yeah i remeber you sending me something now, ill try and look for it... i think i saved it somewhere

I wouldn't toggle your fan, I did once and always forgot to turn it on or off. I found it better to wire it up to the ignition.

There's no reason you can't install a switch to the fan IN ADDITION to the existing temp switch on the engine. Then if you forget to turn it on the temp switch will kick it in once it closes. Provide ANY route to ground for the sensor wire off the relay and the relay will engage (with ign on).
Shouldn't need to though. Lower temp fan switches are available, aftermarket and some stock applications. Really sounds like you have another problem somewhere running the fan won't necessarily fix.
