Fan question

I need some help. Here is what is going on. I noticed about two weeks ago that my temp gauge inside the car quit working. The needle is stuck in the straight up position. Then I had a battery go bad. Now I think the altenator is not charging properly but when I pulled the altenator off and had it tested, they said that it worked fine. They asked me to bring car in so they can look at it. Then as I turned into my parking lot I noticed that I was leaking something. When I shut the car off there was alot of steam that came out from under the hood. When I opened the hood there was coolant spraying from the side. I started the car again to see if fans were on. They were not. I have noticed before that they werent coming on when I started the car. Both fans have been turning on when I start the car. I bought this car in August so I dont know what has been done to it. Could the coolant temp switch be bad? I am curious as to what you guys think. By the way its an 87 iroc 5.7 TPI.

Thanks,

Chad

first thing i would check is the sensor on the driver head. if he wire going to it is burned through or fell off that would keep the gauge from working. however, that would not effect the computer and wouldnt change when they turn on

If the gauge is stuck pegged, take off overlay and see if its just stuck.

I found out that the fan relay was bad on the fans. I bypasses that and both fans came on. But the gauge went out then started working again about a week ago then went out again and was pegged again so I am definately confused. Thanks for all the help guys. Much appreciated.

guage fixed..

I now fixed the gauge but I am really confused on the fan relays. I can bypass either one while both relays are disconnected and both fans will come on. Any suggestions. I have also included pics. You will notice in the pics that the wiring is jacked up. This is how I bought the car so now I am lost. It appears that they did a jumper wire from the black/red wire to the orange wire. The secondary has a similiar wire set up with a jumper from what appears to be the black and pink to the orange as well. I am totally lost. The fans will not come on while the relays are plugged in but if I jump the circuit both fans will run.
