Pictures and instructions for fan switch

I've been looking on this website for a while now gleaning all the information that I could about Camaros. I bought my own about a month and a half ago. I have a 1992 Camaro RS 305 TBI. The other day, my fan decided to not come on and I had no idea what to do. My car overheated and I just barely made it home. I have the single fan setup, so I don't know what differences exist, if any between the single and dual fan setups.

The biggest question I've seen so far is, "Where is the relay for the fan?" It is under the hood on the drivers side all the way up against the firewall. The relay closest to the driver side is the fan relay, the one next to it is the fuel pump. In my pictures, you can see that the fan relay is a light gray. That is because I thought the relay was bad and I bought a new one. Auto stores won't take electronics back once you install it so I just kept it for posterity. The wire that you will be splicing into is green with a white stripe.

You can see that I already spliced into the wire. After I spliced into the wire, I found a suitable ground. This circuit is complete once this wire gets grounded.

This is the location for the ground that I chose. You can really use any place you want to as long as it is free of corrosion and you have a good contact with your wire. It is paramount that whatever you ground it to has a good contact with the body of the vehicle. Once you have these two wires installed, you need to run then wherever your switch is going to be. It's really up to you. I found a black plate on the left side of the steering wheel. It was an option that wasn't bought on my car so I figured that would be an ideal location for a switch.

After I popped off the plate, I made a larger hole with my drill and mounted my switch onto the plate.

This is the front of the switch. The most "stock" looking switch I could find had one of those stupid LED's in it. Don't buy one of these expecting the LED to light up because you are simply grounding a circuit, not applying power.

Sorry for the quality of this picture and a few others. I'm sure you all get the idea, however. On this particular switch, the top prong is the ground, the middle one is the load, and the bottom one is your source (12V). Since there is no power applied here, I hooked up the load and the source. In case you get confused, the "load" is what you want your power applied to, so the wire that you spliced into the green/white wire will be attatched here. The wire connected to whatever ground you chose will be attatched to your source plug.

Again, it's blurry, but you get the idea. Once this is all attatched, turn your car on, hit the switch you just hooked up, and check to see if your fan is spinning. If everything works, just beautify your installation. Make sure all your wires are hidden and in my case, install the faceplate again.

Here is the final result of my installation. My car is in pretty rough shape, but I bought it as a project. But at least my new switch is snazzy.

I hope that all this information has helped at least one person out. It's always easier to do things with pictures coupled with instructions. Again, a reminder, I'm not sure what sort of differences exist between the single fan and dual fan setups. I hope this helped out.

Kudos on a good looking installation.

So you replaced the relay, and it still wouldn't
turn on the fan? And then you put the switch
in, which overides the temp. control switch?

Re: Pictures and instructions for fan switch

Yes, that is correct. The relay was quite frustrating because it should have fixed the problem. That pretty much indicated that there was an actual wiring issue somewhere along the line. I wasn't going to troubleshoot it and fix a length of wire so the switch seemed like the next logical step.
