Now what!

I recently blew heaters hoses in my car... It over heated going over a Mt. in state college, pa.

I since than replaced the hoses, the thermostat, radiator, and the air dam.

It is cooling okay when I am driving on the highway or when I am out on open roads.

When I drive in crowded areas and thru small towns where I must drive slow the temp runs as high as 250 degrees!!!

But as soon as the traffic clears up and I step on it BAM it goes right back down!

What should I do now? Any suggestions?

Re: Now what!

What type of fans do you have, electric or clutch? If electric, make sure they're coming on, clutch fan, try replacing the clutch.

Re: Now what!

there are a bunch of ideas posted above at the begining of this forum, sticky posts you should look at, however, I would get a 170 t-stat, or 180 if you cand find a 170 , drill a couple small holes in it to vent gas ( air pressure ) and get a fan switch for the head to turn your fan on at a cooler temp. . If all was ok and you were happy before check make sure air is out of system, radiator not clogged ( dexcool can settle and separate after a while) water pump is ok.
good luck

Re: Now what!

I replaced the t stat already with a 180 and water pump is new and the fan runs... and the radiatior isnt clogged cause it's brand new..

I guess I can drill holes in the thermostat and see if that works...

Re: Now what!

Have you checked your fan(s)? It shouldn't overheat, even sitting still, with zero airflow. Diagnose the cause, before you start drilling holes, and "band aid"ing your cooling system.

Re: Now what!

Im pretty sure the fan runs but I can check it out this afternoon... it's not so bad when Im sitting still.

When I am sitting still it usually runs at 220 than driving up to about 50mph is around 230 240 and even close to 250.

Anything above 50Mph it stays at 180 degrees.

yea, I bought a BRAND NEW radiator and everything... its all flushed out.

Heres the deal everything is NEW i mean EVERYTHING (except the fan) but the fan works... I just checked that today. No my tank never blew out you must be thinking of someone else... The hoses blew off from so much heat pressure... It over heated I was going over a mt. and no place to turn off, and till I found a spot it blew out...

They exploded cause the old radiator was rusted inside, the thermostat was sticking, and I had no air dam at the time... since than I came here and read other threads and went out and bought the radiator, hoses, air dam, water pump, and thermostat.

I might try STOPS overheating coolant and see if that works, cause I am running out of ideas and I am getting the same answers here.

You might have a cracked head or blew a head gasket. Just throwing somethings out there.

Re: Now what!

yeah i thought you were someone else, so umm the hoses blew out when you stoped?
I duno if you know this but when you shut of an engine it actualy gets about 10/20'F hotter cos the warter pump stops therefor all cooling stops.

Anyway back on the subject What kind of fan you got, Single, Dual, Clutch, Aftermarket?

On that cracked head idea, What colour is youre oil?
Do you lose any coolent?
Are you using coolent or water atm?

Re: Now what!

My oil and coolant seem to be the right color... I may have used a LITTLE coolant in about two months... (like one cup or something)

I do smell antifreeze sometimes when driving, but NOT very strong, my dad says he thinks a gasket could be broke and maybe a tube of stops leak will fix that up.

If my block would be clogged or a head gasket would be blown or even a cracked head, isnt that pretty serious??

Re: Now what!

you can try pull the plugs on the side of the block.. the ones close to the oil pan rail.. there should be one on each side.. if you take them off and no water comes out, its clogged.. clean all that crap out and more water to more places which means cooler engine

see the allen head plug near the oilpan rail?? between the 3rd and 4th main.. pull both sides..
