Water Pump Won't Come Off!

On my '86 Trans Am I have removed the 4 retaining bolts but the pump won't separate from the engine block.......even with the aid of a 3-foot pry bar!
I have looked at the pic of a replacement pump and I see 4 bolt holes. I had the pump out about 12-13 years ago no problem, The car sits outside but gets driven once in a while in the summer.
Please tell me I missed a 5th (or 6th) bolt that is hiding from me.

Thanks

Re: Water Pump Won't Come Off!

First let me say "WELCOME TO BOARDS!!!

I'm almost positive that every chevy V8 built from 1955 up to 1993 or so had only 4 bolts on the water pump. I had mine out to replace it last year and it was a bugger. Sometimes they just get frozen to the block.

Also, on my 84 T/A at least, I had to remove a 9/16 nut for the bracket for the powersteering pump. It's on the drivers side and I had to swivel the power steering pump out of the way. I can't remember if it also held the AC or not but either way, I did not need to remove the powersteering pump (Or AC Compressor). After removing the 4 bolts, there is a hole on the water pump (Drivers side) that a stud goes through and a bolt tightens down to hold that bracket in place. The stud is on the block so you just need to remove the nut to gain access. If you look at how your AC and Power steering brackets are mounted you should be able to find what I'm talking about. If you can't, I'll take a picture and post it for you. Good luck!

Re: Water Pump Won't Come Off!

Thanks. I've removed the power steering fluid pump stud.
I guess I'll just keep soaking the water pump with PB Blaster and hopefully it will eventually loosen up.

That stud had me stuck for like 30 minutes until I found it. I was like "Why won't this come off!!!???" lol....That's all I can think of as to why it wouldn't come off. Best of luck to ya. Have you tried a hammer?

Ding ding ding!!! You were absolutely right. That %#@* power steering pump was hiding a bolt I hadn't seen. There are 4 bolts retaining the pump but I missed that one. The water pump is out......finally. LOL

I was thinking about deleting this thread, but just in case there is another idiot like me who is approaching senility, this info may be helpful.

The good thing about senility is you're always meeting new people. LOL
