Fan control

Is it safe for the fan motor to run at all times? I ask this because i have had so many cooling fan control issues in the past im thinking that i should just wire the fan to a key on power source. has anyone else done this? my only fear is burning up the fan motor, i know some electric motors are built to only be run for short periods of time, is this in that category?

Re: Fan control

I did this with one of my fans and it did eventually die, but it was 18 years old at the time and probably ran for a year that way. Fans are cheap and easy to replace, ruined motors are not.

Re: Fan control

I wouldn't run it all the time. Not only will it shorten motor life, but the motor pulls a lot of amps, that is why it runs through a relay. If you do go to a key on setup, I would recommend you ground the negative side of the existing relay and run it through that. that way you will still have circuit protection, because when the motor starts failing, it can really pull amps and without a fuse you are asking for wire harness damage.

Re: Fan control

Get a $15.00 temperature switch and run a hot lead through the switch to your fan so that It'll come on at your desired tempurature. I did this when I went from a single to a dual set up. I kept the origional switch for the main fan but the second comes on at 220 degrees.

Re: Fan control

where do you get the fan thermo switch?
I found a used one but it comes on at 221'F, I thought I was buying one form summit but it turned out to be a temp sender.
It said "thermostat switch", so I feel like I got screwed.
