you prolly have a few blades broke of the impeller of the one your running now.
mine would run at a constant 180,what thermo stat did you put in it?

Im thinkin it may still be working, but you may have a blade or 2 busted on the impeller,so it would still flow but not enough.what thermostat did you put in?

Re: Overheating problem on 86 trans am help please!!!!!

Here's a list of the things I would start checking:

1. Thermostat. Put the factory recommended thermostat in. Be sure that it opens or closes by putting it in a pot of boiling water on the stove. You can use a lower temp thermostat if you want, but I would not go below 180*.

2. Air dam under car. Check to see that the air dam is on the car. It is the lower spoiler in front. Sometimes these get damaged by tow trucks and parking blocks. Make sure it is pushing air upwards toward radiator.

3. Check to see front of radiator has no obstructions. Look for the plastic components that direct the air to the radiator behind the front bumper above air dam. It should look like a giant vent or air passageway directly to radiator.

4. Fill car up with coolant while running with cap for radiator off. Do this when car is cold and warming up to ensure all air bubbles are out.

5. Watch to see if fans come on when warmed up. If not, start checking for for electrical problem, switches, wires, or sensor. (on passenger side of engine on head).

Common sense things need to be checked like coolant level in radiator not just overflow bottle, and the color of the coolant. It should be bright green. Your car is an 86 and I am not sure if you have a manual fan on that or not... If so, disregard #5.

This should get you pointed in the right direction...

Good luck!

I have an 86 Trans Am as well, it has an electric fan. Unless of course, Canadian 86's were different
