I think my answer is simple but,do I have to run an overflow tank ? I removed it when I put in my 383 in just tring to clean the engine bay up and it keeps pushing water and gets low on water and trys to get hot . THANKS

 

yes , you do need the overflow tank . yes the stock tank is ugly . you can do what i and many others have done . install a 4th gen over flow tank . about 40 bux new from dealership . simple to install , remove battery , cut out bottom of old battery tray ( its probaly rusted/corroded anyway ) place new tank/batt. tray in place , mark holes , drill , install 2 3/8 bolts , bolt down , done . make sure filler neck clears fender lip before marking & drilling holes . two problems solved , hidden tank , new plastic battery tray . one more thing you will need new overflow hose , feed it into new tank till it touchs bottom then draw back about 1/2 in. , connect to rad. . get one from J/Y if your lucky . good luck .

You don't have to run an overflow, but you will have to allow room for expansion of the coolant in the radiator. I ran mine with just a hose that went to the bottom of the car for almost a year. Recently, I just installed a Summit 1qt. overflow bottle so that I can fill my radiator up completely (a little better cooling) and be legal if I go to a track.

Thanks for the recommendation. I went on GM PARTS DIRECT and bought one. Resivoir, cap, hose and shipping was $59. Thanks for the idea. Never would have thought of that.

Thanks guys that is perfect, and I have a buddy that has a junk yard so I will hit him up tommorow at lunch to see what he has. Not to sound dumb but how does the system work that it needs an over tank? How does the water get back into the rad. after it pushes it into the tank ?

 

simple physics water/coolant expands with heat , shrinks when cooled . goes into tank when hot , drawn back into rad. when cooled . remember physics class that we all slept through in H/S . hope this helps , good luck .

 

The part I dont understand is the outlet is above the lip of the radiator cap so once the system cools down and there is no presure in the system the cap seals so how does the water get past back into the radiator ? Don't get me wrong im not questioning the fact that it does becuse like I said my car was clearly pushing little bits of water and got low on water so it clearly needs the tank I just wonder how it works my guess is it creates a vacume and pulls the water but the vacume would just seal the cap tighter. thanks again for all your patiants with my quistions .

See now you got me all excited about this damn resivoir. I understand don't cut too much off and touch up, got that. Below is the resivoir that I bought. It's for a 93 Camaro. From what I can see there ar only two mounting bolts (yes/no). Do I need to add strapping to the bottom for support. Or just relax and wait until I see the actual resivoir.

Thanks again man that is an awesome idea. This will allow me to move my MSD to that area.

 

o.k. sarge ( ? ) , the 2 bolts are all that is needed . thats all that 4th gen. use . mine has been in use for more than 3yrs. , with no problems . if you want you could add extra support . i don't think you will need it , but it's not a bad idea . and yes that would be a great place for an msd box . good luck .

 

Just got my resivoir in yesterday from gm parts direct. Thought I would post what it looks like on here for anyone who gives a damn. If you're like me, you do better with pictures. Next time I head home I will send pictures when I finish getting it installed. Thanks again for the tip.
