Why is my AC compressor on all the time?

My car's AC compressor doesn't cycle normally anymore. It seems to be on all the time when the AC or the defroster is on. The AC still blows cool air, but it isn't cold. Such has been the case for a while, but it is only recently that the compressor has been on all the time, and it gets very hot. What could be causing this condition?
Thanks

I doubt this but maybe the clutch is siezed. I would think it would spin with the ac on or off though.

I think your problem is that you don't have enough refigerant in the system.
Thus the compressor is trying to keep up and getting hot in the process.

Hope this helps.

I would have to agree. Is it cycling on and off rapidly at idle?

Actually it does not cycle at all. It stays on all the time. When I rev the engine it seems to shut off. Unless it cycles so rapidly that I can't tell when its off.

It shuts off when you rev it? Then you may have just enough freon in it to keep it running while it's at idle, but when the rpm's ramp up it'll flick the low pressure shut off switch. That would be my guess.
