Repair / Replace AC...

About a year ago, I paid IceColdAir to upgrade my 91 so it could use the new cooling stuff... about $250...

After they did that, they said it still had a leak...

I asked them, worst case scenario, if everything else (compressor / heater core / etc..) had to be replaced, how much?

They told me about $1000 for parts & labor...
I just called another Ice Cold Air place today & they quoted me $1900!!!!

Can someone with some experience here let me know what these parts should cost & labor?

Thanks,

Rafael

Re: Repair / Replace AC...

That doesn't sound very professional to me, leak testing should be the first thing done so it can be remedied before conversion and filling.. And they should be able to pinpoint exactly where the leak is..
The "new" R134a leaks much more easily than the "old" R12 as its molecules are smaller. Old style hoses may need to be replaced with special "barrier hoses".
Of course replacing everything may be expensive but I don't see why that would be necessary here.

dude, ur notchback is sweet. Sounds like the A/C places are giving you the runaround. you could do a number of things, but a vaccum pump (200-300 bucks) and do it yourself, its really not that hard, you could buy used parts that are still in good shape, people on the boards usually have extra stuff (i have a compressor if u need one) or you could just shop around.

I just had hoses made on a conversion van with dual a/c and it only cost me $150.00 for everything including the the new o-rings I replaced. If the compressor is leaking figure $200-300. Evaporator $ 150. Condensor $150. All parts not including labor to install them.

DAMN!! where'd you get all the hoses made for that price?. We went to Discount Auto last week for a hose on my husbands Dakota, and they wanted $89.00 for just one hose.

Ice Cold Air asks way too much for work because they prey on old people and can get that price from them....On Top of The World retirement community is nearby and that`s what pays their bills......get quotes in Largo

Re: Repair / Replace AC...

I called Advanced Auto and to get a compressor with a 2 year warranty & all new stuff, including hose / pipe kit is about $600...

I want it to work nice, so I guess might as well change everything...

Now to find a good mechanic / shop...

The drive & the how long do I wait are a problem for me...

I'm legally blind, so I need a driver... it's about a 2 hour drive each way...

Re: Repair / Replace AC...

When you switch from R12 to R134 make sure you switch all the seals...those are the most likely culprit in a leaky system after a conversion and the one thing that most shops don't chang unless they are visibly bad. Has something to do with chemical breakdown which won't be visible to the naked eye. I'd go to the dealership first and see if they'll do a leak check. They are "supposed" to go by the book price for checking that stuff so if you ask, you'll know ahead of time exactly how long it's supposed to take and how much it'll cost. that way you're not getting dicked around by a company that say "It'll take about so long..."
