just installed 180* stat royal purples ice and under drive pullys. runs very cold.

so i just installed my undr drive pullys and while i was in their i flushed my cooling system and added royal purples ice stuff and changed my stock 195* stat for a 180* stat.

its running very very cold now like 120-140it wont rise at all.

the underdrive pully makes the water pupm spin faster becuase the crank pullys smaller and wp pully is the same size is this contributing to being cooler as well?

and ive heard royal purples ice drops temps about 20* but either way that 180* stat it should run at a minimum of 180* right?

this is on my 87 iroc 5.7

well at least i think its about 120-140 on the stock gauge.

its below the first mark about halfway from 100 to the first un numbered mark.

how exactly is the stock gauge to be read?

is 160* the first unnumbered mark?

that might be the problem. youve upgraded the cooling system enough that youve over compensated with the 180. you shuld be able safely run the 195. i always run the stock thermostat and ive never had any problems.

My gauge reads 40, 100, 130° (celcius)

1/4th on mine is exactly 180°F. The gauges aren't linear. So in mine, although the difference between 40 and 100 would conceivably be 70° (158F), it's actually 180°F.

When I had the 160° thermostat, it would close the thermostat (after cooling down) at 2 ticks below 1/4 on my gauge. 175° was 1 tick below 1/4th.

With the Hypertech turning the first fan on at 172°, it would turn on between 1 tick before 1/4th and 1/4th. I seem to recall that the Camaros' middle number was 105 instead of 100. So that would mean the needle would be a bit closer to the lower end than mine.

You sure you didn't put a 160° thermostat in there? Even driving in wintertime, it should still get to the thermostat opening point.

Is the Royal Purple stuff you're talking about an additive (like water wetter) or is it an antifreeze replacement?

the rp is an additive yes. and according to a scan tool im runiing right around 180 ish from the cts. yet the gauge itself still reads below the first tick(the 1/4 mark)

on a side note as to your previous statement of a smaller crank pulley making the water pump turn faster is incorrect. they call it an underdrive pulley because thats what it does, underdrives the pullies.

smaller crank pulley = slower rotation of everything else
smaller pulley on any of the accessories = faster rotation
