Need to know coolant flow

I have an overheating problem that got a little better when I got the fan working. I've posted before with my overheating problem and didn't get much help. I just need a diagam of how the coolant is supposed to flow through an LG4 305.

The way everythings going now it appears that coolant is coming from the waterpump into the radiator, from the radiator through the thermostat into the intake manifold. There's also two hoses by the firewall going to and coming from the heater core I believe. One connects to the intake manifold and the other connects to the waterpump. The way everything is now the left one (looking from the front of the car) connects to the manifold and has coolant flowing from the manifold, and the right hose has coolant coming from the firewall to the water pump. Just wondering if this is correct? I have a picture of the engine posted below.

Also wondering what and the function of what I circled below is?

And what I circled below this is too? And is it alright that part is disconected where it looks like a vaccum line goes in on the top?

Re: Need to know coolant flow

not sure on the first one, the second one is a heater control/dirverter valve, it blocks flow through the heater core to keep temps down when the a/c is on, well at least that's what it does on a properly working setup.

Re: Need to know coolant flow

The pump sucks water from the bottom of the radiator and also from the heater core. It is then pushed into the block, where it is passed up to the tops and then through the intake manifold. There one outlet leads to the heater core while the rest is passed through the thermostat before going into the radiator top.
Water always circulates through the heater core unless the vacuum operated valve commands it shut. You seem to also have tee in the other heater core hose. I don't know where that would lead to.

Thank you so much! Deffinatly helps. I thought the flow at the waterpump was wrong but your explaination helped clear that up.

Anybody know where that too in the heater core hose goes to? It seems to go by the firewall.

Re: Need to know coolant flow

The thing in the 2nd picture might be connections for the factory sandwitch adapter (between engine and oil filter).. Cooland flows there and teoreticly cools the oil..

Re: Need to know coolant flow

I believe the tee in the hose is on the return side of the heater meaning the water is being pulled towards the water pump through the heater hose & the tee. It looks like the tee hooks up to the rear of the manifold. Alot of times, engines are plumbed this way as a deaeriation device to simply relieve air from the system when it is drained & refilled or if the system is by design prone to aeriation from the pump. It may also be there to pull some coolant from the rear of the motor for better cooling in general.

Re: Need to know coolant flow

This is just odd because I haven't seen it on any other 305's and my Firebird books don't show what it is.

I've never heard of coolant going to the oil filter.... Isn't oil and coolant mixing a bad thing? :-\

Re: Need to know coolant flow

They are not mixing.. Factory oil cooler works the way that a sandwich is bitween block and oil filter, oil goeas straight up and all around goes cooler, cooling oil.. I dont know a better way to dicribe it..

So I think I know what your saying. Is it bacially like a mini radiator then? Or like an intercooler to a turbocharger?
What am I looking for to tell if what your saying is there?

Re: Need to know coolant flow

Hmm.. I think more like an intercooler, becouse intercoolers are cooled by cooland not air..? But Im not a turbo fan
Just look at you oil filter, between filter and engine block should be this cooler - 1, maybe 2 inches high - with two hoses (or maybe hard lines, Im not shure) going out for it.
