Are these fan temp settings wise? Please advise!

First off it gets pretty hot in the summer here, over 115. Second my goal is to keep the operating temperature in the optimum range without going over but not cooling off too much. I was running a 180 degree thermostat and had all of my temp settings in my PROM adjusted for this but because of smog testing and mileage concerns, I've reinstalled the stock 195 degree thermostat, which is the reason now for this thread.

Here are the updated settings that I have set in my chip now:

Fan 1 Enable Temp: 104c/219f
Fan 1 Disable Temp: 101c/214f
Fan 2 Enable Temp: 110c/230f
Fan 2 Disable Temp: 104c/219f

Here are the stock settings for the AXXF 1992 LB9 chip:

Fan 1 Enable Temp: 108c/226f
Fan 1 Disable Temp: 105c/221f
Fan 2 Enable Temp: 151c/304f
Fan 2 Disable Temp: 151c/304f
Yeah that's no typo on the Fan 2 stock temp settings above

Now, how practical are my changes are will they accomplish what I'm after?

Thanks!

Those settings seem fine to me for a 195. What gas mileage are you noticing with the 195 thermostat over the 180?

I've only had it in for 2 days and I work only 7 mins away from my house so my temp is only around 200f by the time I even get to work.

After I smog it again this weekend and get some highway miles, I'll start logging it.

I'm not sure where I read it (I think the old TPIS book), but I remember that the TPI runs best with 170* t-stat. AC Delco makes them. The issue with that is there is only two places to get one: 1)TPIS or 2) order one through the dealership. If you go to the dealership, they will tell you that it doesn't exist. You have to give them the part number. I don't have it handy, but if you look in the "Willie's updated Total Fan Control" write-up it has the p/n in there. That is the t-stat I have been running for the last nine years and it works fine. Easy way to solve the 160/180/195 debate. Hope that helps.

Yeah, they were recommending the 170° stat instead of the 160°, saying that the 160 was too cold. But TPIS is based out of Minnesota. If you live where it gets to 115°, it doesn't matter what kind of thermostat you have, it's going to be open.

Figure 115° air, 150° pavement temperature. Your thermostat will be opening up in about 30 seconds of driving with the 160 or 170 stats. Maybe 1 minute with the 195 stat.

I don't get the triple digit ambient temps here. But it does stay in the high 80's/low 90's with high humidity. The humidity seems to make a bigger difference than the temperature when it comes to vehicle temps. There are times when I sometimes think I should have gone for a 170° instead of a 180° thermostat. But over all, the car tends to run in the 185-195 range pretty much all the time. Not bad.
