Fan runs constant, how do I fix it?

I have a 1984 Trans Am with a 305 HO. My problem is the fan does not kick on by itself. I have to run the car with the AC switch on (AC is not hooked up yet) to kick the fan on otherwise it will overheat. I realize there has to be a sensor or relay that controls the fan but have no idea where it may be located. The wiring is a mess and a lot of wires are not connected so if you know, please be specific as you can. Also, after many running problems, I had to remove the computer control unit and have replaced the distributor with a non-computer controlled unit and it also has an new Eldebrock intake and carburetor. Only stating this in case any of that wiring came into play. Any help would be appreciated. The car is close to becoming a daily driver as I continue to turn it into the Knight Rider car. Just need to work out these bugs before I feel comfortable jumping into it every day.
