fan problem and overheating-- i'm lost ????
my cooling fan will not come on at all any more. the guy i bought the car from two months ago replaced the old fans and just has a single one and wired to a on/off switch that you control yourself. i always had it on 100% of the time, but it recently went out and i think its the cause of my overheating problems.
when it first went out i didnt know it and my car started overheating mad-style on the expressway, i mean smoke and all so i stopped it and let it cool down and then took a look. the heater valve was completely melted off at one of the nozzles so the radiator line had slipped off and was spewwing fluid everywhere. the problem here was obvious, i got a new heater valve, put the hose back on, and everything was fine for a bit.
then i noticed that my car was overheating again, but ONLY when sitting still. i've heard that other 3rd gen owners experience this same phenomenon and that its nothing to worry about but still it bugs me. as long as i'm revving the engine or driving at a constant speed its fine, but as soon as i let it idle at a red light or parked, it starts to gradually increase in temp to about 220 or more then i have to shut it off. yesterday i replaced the thermostat thinking to cure the problem. nope. so i figured MAYBE i just happened to get a faulty therm, so took it back, got another one, and did the same swap all over again. still, when i sit without moving or revving the engine, it begins steadily climbing again. THEN i noticed that my fan is out. would this have anything to do with overheating though? i know cooling fans are there to cool, but do they really cool enough to determine whether an engine overheats or not? i think the circuit is bad or the fuse is blown or something, because it doesn't turn on at all when i flip the switch. how can i fix this? and also someone told me that another possible problem may be that there is air in my radiator lines causing them to heat up? what does this actually mean, and how would i find out if there was air in them and rectify the situation? i know this has been a long and boring post but i realllllllllllllyyyyy need help with this, its starting to drive me nuts how i can't figure out how to cool down my car. any help would be much appreciated.

Re: fan problem and overheating-- i'm lost ????
Hey I'm having the same problem.
I don't know a lot about my car.
But i do know that the fan keeps the engine cool.
It supposed to turns on at a certain temp and turn off at a certain temp.
I just turn my a/c on when i need 2 turn my fan on.
Because it doesn't turn on by itself.

You said the fans dont go on when you flip the switch thats your problem no air to cool the radiator, do you have the stock fan wiring? test the fan motor or check the fuses always check fuses first!!
Re: fan problem and overheating-- i'm lost ????
Yeah i know what your going through!! I'm having the same problem with my 88 GTA. For sure check the fuses first, You said even when you turn on the toggle switch the fans are not coming on? If thats the case then that toggle might have burned out! (I've had that problem too). Just go buy another toggle for now and try it then. Untill i can get a for sure problem solver on mine theres not much else i can tell you right now. I'm about to change the sensors and all that good stuff in mine and hope to god that fixes my problems!!
