Installing dual fans

I have an 86 Iroc that originally came with dual fans but when I got my car fixed they put in a single fan. And my car has been over heating. Well i checked and found out I had a single fan so I went to go buy a dual setup from a guy that I know except it didn't have the harnesss. I was looking up a wiring harness from jegs http://www.jegs.com/p/JEGS/758607/10002/-1 part number 555-10559 the very first one. the picture doesnt look like it comes with the harness to plug into the fan. Any Help
Thanks

Re: Installing dual fans

That's an aftermarket fan control kit, and does not include the plugs to fit the OEM fans.

Re: Installing dual fans

I would probably just jumper the second fan to the first if the relay will support it. If it wont, then I would wire a second relay to turn it on when thefirst one does. The factory harness for dual fans is gonna require a lot of re-wiring to get it to work properly.

Re: Installing dual fans

Is it possible if I could just get connectors and crimp it to the wire and make my own adapter and run it to the relay because all it looks like are a ground and positive prong on the fan motors

Re: Installing dual fans

Crimp type connectors do not make good contact under a heavy amp load like a fan motor. They will heat up, and eventually burn out where the crimp is. You will want to get the proper size spade/blade connector, solder the wires, the use shrink wrap to insulate it. As for the single to dual conversion, my car came with a single fan, and I converted it to dual fans. The single fan relay is stout enough for the one fan motor, but not two. Cars with dual fans have two relays. One is controlled by engine temp and the other by head pressure on the A/C compressor. The single fan motor is the same motor with different blades as the dual fan motor, so keep your old single fan motor for a spare. I used the factory single fan control to power a 70 amp relay with a 50 amp breaker in the circuit. The 50 amp breaker gets its power directly from the battery. The single fan control provides power to the relay that switches the power straight from the battery via the breaker to power the fans. I also bought the same kit you are looking at from Jegs, and installed the aftermarket fan switch in the top of a thermostat housing that has a treaded fitting in it. The aftermarket fan switch is set for 195 degrees. The stock switch triggers at 230 degrees. This way at 195 degrees the aftermarket switch triggers it's 15 amp relay, which provides power to the 70 amp relay which powers the fans. The fans also activate when the A/C is on, through the stock system. If the aftermarket system fails for some reason, the stock system will bring on the fans at 230 degrees, as a safety feature. Since the stock system continues to use the factory relay and the aftermarket system powers its relay, and both provide power to the 70 amp relay which provides power to the fans, it acts like an isolator, and there are no risks of a feedback to the car's computer, risking damage to the stock system. My car has been like that for three years. It's operating tempature is nearly constant at 195 to 200 degrees, which for these cars is cool. Some people like to run them cooler, but the fuel injection works best around 190 to 200 degrees.

Re: Installing dual fans

The thermostat housing with a threaded outlet should be avalable at most autoparts stores. I got mine at NAPA. They are lsited in Jegs, Summit, and most others. Some of the older model GM cars used that housing with a vacumm switch for the emssions controls threaded into it, so it is a common part.

not if you do it correctly, ive been running solderless connections to both of my fans (stock single fan, and an aftermarket push fan) for 4 years now and no problem. however, i do agree with you that soldering IS the better way.

i also have them wired through the summit universal fan relay kit. (the temp sending unit needs an adaptor) my car always runs as cool as the thermostat allows.

is your air dam in good repair?

also, i wouldnt get a manual fan control, one slip of the mind and you could toast your engine. also, if you really needed manual, you could put a switch to the relay on the auto setups, then it would cool itself when you wanted it to.

Re: Installing dual fans

I would like to install dual fans but use factory stuff. Anybody gotten the harness and fans off a donor car? If not I can add another relay to the system to have them both come on when temp reaches 230* or lower, but how can I do it so when I turn the A/C on one fan comes on and if the engine gets hot the second fan comes on?

I would be interested in the pin outs on the factory dual fan harness if anyone has them. Thanks much.

The 'tech articles' section of this site has a link to 86 camaro diagrams.

Then, there is also austin thirdgen which has a variety as well...

I rigged the fans so that they both come on with AC or temperature. The following link provides some part numbers that may be helpful:

Re: Installing dual fans

Would it be more simplistic to purchase a dual fan controller (flex-a-lite 31163), splice into the donar fan harness?

Ideal is 190 ish but its had to do in Az in the summer. My temp gauge doesnt give the correct temp either. I have to have a scanner hooked up in order to know exactly what my temp is.

from the factory the fan(s) come on at 230* that's a bit toasty. I like 195-200* myself

Re: Installing dual fans

Has anyone on here installed the Flex-a-Lite 31163 or 31165 dual fan controller? I am wondering if factory fans could be wired into this controller. Upgrading from a mechanical clutch fan to dual factory electrics...understanding that the secondary fan was controlled by the A/C and the primary from the ECM. No ECM in my car, so considering the 31163.

Re: Installing dual fans

I haven't used that controller. If I were you though I would make sure to get the dual fans out of a 94-02 camaro/firebird. They are shrouded and work much better than the duals our cars were originally equipped with. Then add a controller to those. Ebay is where I got mine. They fit with very little modding needed.

would they spin faster then 3rd gen fans?

Yes you can. They are the same. The best thing you can do is buy the shroud they use and install it on your car.

Yea thats a good idea. You think that shroud will work with the factory 3rd gen dual fan set up?

Re: Installing dual fans

I used the 31165 controller when I had dual 4th gen fans. I have used that controller on several builds and it always worked perfect. what I did for connections is buy butt connectors without the plastic covering. stripped the wire just enough to fill each side of the crimp connector and crimped the connector all the way across. that way the crimp wasn't just in one spot. I then heatshrinked over the connector. this has always and will work. and it will turn the fans or fan on at 60% and only go to 100% if needed. usually never.

Re: Installing dual fans

No the shroud wont work with our fans. You need to buy a complete assembly with fans and motors. The pigtails are the same and will snap right in. One92rs's way of wiring in a controller sounds great if you need it.
