NAME This Sensor
Is this a coolant temperature sensor? If so, what is its purpose and if faulty will it cause my fans not to work. When unplugged, the fans cut in with the ignition but whenn it's plugged in the fans dont cut it at all. Please Help

Yes it is and yes if faulty your fans will not work correctly. It's purpose is to control the fans through the ecm.

Did this come out of the engine from low on the passenger side just above the starter or, the top front of the engine?

Ok so i'm replacing two sensors. One is the one in the picture which came from the front of the block just under the intake manifold. It has two wires coming out of it. The other is a sensor with one little prong on the underside of the block on the drivers side. Can you explain the difference between the three because i dont think my gauges work, but my fans dont work either. I'm trying to get the fans working. BUTTTT when i unplug the one shown in the picture, the fans cut in automatically but i was told this also regulates fuel consumption so the car ran a lot worse when i had it unplugged. Thanks

there are two sensors on the intake one that u showed is 4 a gage the one beside it is 4 the ecu then there is the one u need to change is on the block with one wire if u ground that wire the fans will run constantly thats the temp sender 4 fan relays

There are two sensors on the intake. One that you showed is for a gauge. The one beside it is for the ecu. Then, there is the one you need to change on the block with one wire. If you ground that wire, the fans will run constantly. That's the temp sender for fan relays.
On an "87 (TPI), the pictured sensor would be the temp sensor for the ECM. The two wire colors should be yellow and black.
The other 'sensor' (it isn't), next to the coolant temp sensor on the front of intake manifold, is the thermo-time switch for the 9th injector. The two wire colors should be tan and purple
The coolant temp sender is the one in the drivers side head. It has a single green wire connected to it.
The fan switch is in the passenger side head. It has a single black wire.
The coolant temperature sensor (CTS) is more then just for turning the cooling fan on. It tells the ECM what temperature the engine is so it can adjust fuel (and timing ?) according to temperature. The ECM has a preset temperature to turn the primary fan (not fans) on at 220°F.

Where is it located on the passenger side head? I cant seem to see it because there is no room. I do see a single black wire which has been cut but i have no idea where it comes from or if it is the right wire that belongs to the fan switch. I am thinking the fan switch is my problem because my water pump is fine and my gauge works fine. Could you help me a little as to where to find the switch?

Maybe it's your unbelievably bad grammar and non existent punctuation. Mine is far from great as well, but christ, a period or comma here or there won't kill you.
87iroc, the fan switch is located between the cyl 6 and 8 exhaust ports. Most likely you can't see it because the manifold is hiding it. Keep in mind too, the fan switch turns on at a chilly 238°F. So, it may be working if there is a wire still attached, you're just (thankfully) not reaching its turn on temperature.
If the cut black wire you found is indeed for the fan switch, grounding it will cause the secondary (passenger) fan to start running ( if the ign is on ). Almost all black wires in the harness are ground. You generally won't run a risk of frying anything by grounding it.

i found the cut wire on the fan switch and grounded it and the fans worked fine. I'm gonna take a harder look tomorrow to try and wire the switch back up. Anyway problem is solved hopefully.

Jack the car up and secure it with jackstands. Look up above the starter solenoid and you will be able to see that switch. I found it virtually impossible to see from the engine bay in my car.
