Radiator Fan Issues

Hi.. I tried to find the answer to this.. but couldn't... so here goes.. don't kill me if I missed it somewhere lol.

I would like to find the switch for my 89 Camaro 305 tbi electric fan, so I can test if I have a bad switch or bad motor on the fan. My car runs very cool at highway speeds (anything over 30, actually), but when I have to drive slower, it creeps up in a matter of minutes.. and if I don't shut the car off.. it WILL overheat.. I opened the hood when it was running hot yesterday, and sure enough.. fan wasn't on.. so.. I am deducting that it is either the motor or the switch.

Can someone show me a picture with the location of the switch? And suggested manor in testing these issues... I would greatly appreciate it

Thanks in advance

Re: Radiator Fan Issues

If it is a smallblock it is on the passenger side head in between #6 & #8 sparkplug about 2 inches above them.

Re: Radiator Fan Issues

Well.. I checked everything out.. and found out 2 things..

First.. it was the electric fan motor that went bad. - now replaced.

Second.. the fan is rubbing on something BAD.. no clue what but it makes one hell of a noise.. so I have to figure something out before I can drive it still.. I noticed that the fan will spin freely when it is not bolted up to the radiator, but once bolted.. it is rubbing on something.. I assumed it was/is the shroud.. SO.. I cut the round parts between the bolted on parts.. to see if that was the problem.. improved.. but still rubbing.. should I be getting a new fan and shroud? Or is it likely hitting something else?

Seriously frustrated here..

Re: Radiator Fan Issues

Not to be a smart-***, but find a way to turn the fan on.

Easiest way might be to disconnect the "sender" switch,
& RubeGoldberg a test lead to connect the sender wire to ground.
(When the temp trips the sensor, it closes to ground connection
at the block. The ground signal then activates the fan relay.)
Will probably have to have ign. on.

Or brute force: RubeGoldberg a power connection straight to the fan.

Either way, it shouldn't take long to identify where/why the rub
is occuring.

Good luck, hope this helps.

Re: Radiator Fan Issues

To the best of my abilities.. it seems as though it is rubbing on what is left of the shroud. Even though it moves freely when not bolted to the radiator.. it seems to get in a bind of sorts when I bolt it up..

Probably going to have to just get a new fan
