Here's a link to the thread referenced above by 84 Kamp311.

And, here's my contribution. A list of things to consider:

  • Make sure you get both the fan and motor from the non-A/C box, for proper firewall to fan clearance. A/C motor can be used with short non-A/C fan, but spacer is needed (that's what I did)...
  • You can keep your A/C type controls. I think the non-A/C controls are not vacuum actuated like the A/C ones so swapping to that is more difficult, as the actuators and cables must also be swapped. Doesn't sound like you are doing that though so you should be fine.
  • If you want your fan to have 4-speeds you will have to use the resistor pack from your A/C box.
  • There may be a difference in motor connectors between your A/C motor and a non-A/C one. My A/C one had a two contact weather pack connector, the non-A/C ones I have laying around have two separate wires. I don't remember what the power one is on the non-A/C ones, but the ground is a spade type connector. You might be able to get the wiring from the car you get the non-A/C box from.
  • The max speed fan motor relay will dangle, as there is no provisions on the non-A/C box for it to mount.
  • My opinion: Ignore what you may read/hear about S-10 boxes fitting easily with little modifications. I got one and as I remember the mods needed are more than just drilling a couple screw holes.
  • Be careful when removing any heater box of the mounting stud back there by the heater hoses. I have had that strip out its anchor point and spin due to a slightly rusted nut. I think it is anchored in plastic on the other side of the firewall. That's why it is easy to strip out.
  • And, finally, good luck with your project. It really cleans up the 'ol engine bay and makes getting to the back couple plugs on the pass. side that much easier.

On a side note, here's what I did with my serpentine setup 'cause I broke my tensioner and had no more A/C compressor. Probably more work than it was worth...

Re: a/c delete questions

Yessir. If you run it w/o a firewall box though, you might get more than normal amount of engine bay heat coming into passenger compartment, maybe some smells too depending on the state of the engine (i.e. exhaust seals/valve cover seals)...
