91 RS 350 runs hot

Hi there ya'll,
I'm picking up a '91 RS this weekend, the guy says it runs hot after 10-15 minutes and the fan(s) don't come on. I want to jump out the relay's & see if the fans come on. If they do, i'll drive it home that way (about 30 min drive) and then diagnose it. If not, i'll have to go get my trailer & dually which is a PIA and couple hours away. I had a 3rd gen many years ago, a Black Z28 but i can't remember where the ran relay's are. Can you say brain-dead? hahaha Anyway are they under the hood like my '94 Impala SS, or in the fuze box with the fuses? Might also be the air dam missing or damaged, i haven't looked at it while it's not pouring rain yet. The guy gave up on the car after the 350 transplant with the TBI engine, his loss is my gain i guess. Very nice car from the looks of it. Thanks for any help and info, i appreciate it a bunch.

Re: 91 RS 350 runs hot

If it has A/C - turn on the A/C and see if the fans run - A/C will make the fans run constantly. If it runs wit A/C on, then it's a bad fan switch. If it doesn't run with A/C on, then it's the relay or the fan motor itself. So - call the seller and ask him turn on the key, turn on the A/C, and check - might save ya some hassle long enough to baby it home.

Re: 91 RS 350 runs hot

Humm that's a good idea, if i can get in touch with him before sunday i'll do that. He's working out of town after today until saturday evening. I really wasn't looking for a 3rd gen, i had my eyes on a '76 until this one literally fell into my lap. New crate 350 engine, dark metallic blue paint about 8 months old, spotless grey interior, new tires, thumper stero asking $1200! Said that when he told the callers it had a transplanted 350 & would run hot they all ran away. lol
But are the fan relays under the hood in a box on the passenger fender, or is my memory wonky, and i'm remembering my '94 Impala SS LT1? I'm 99% sure it's either the relays, temp sensor or actually a bad fan motor. He said they worked fine before the transplant, so i think it's something simple that's been overlooked by someone who's not a car guy.
Thanks for the tip on running the A/C.

Fan relay should be in a metal bracket on the driver's side firewall, between the brake booster and the fender. There are 2 relays there, 1 for the fuel pump. 1 for the fan - the fan relay has much larger wires going to it, one is black and thick. You can switch the relays to test them, as they are both the same relay. Good luck!

Kewl, thanks for the info. I'm looking forward to getting it, i haven't had a thrid gen camaro in a long while and loved my other one. Had to sell it due to getting married and moving to a Texas from Alabama. It was either sell it or my '68 Camaro. (
