Erractic cooling fans-1991 - Z28-305 VinF
I own a 1991 Camaro Z28 with 305 Vin F engine with AC. Cooling fans show erratic operation. The primary fan comes/stays on with AC, but will not turn on, with AC off, at coolant specified temp of 222degrees F . The secondary-heavy duty fan will not turn on with AC but turns on at the coolant specified temp of 238 degrees. The 1991 OEM shop manual indicates BOTH should turn on with AC on high , and with AC off both should be on starting at each specific coolant temp.
I have flushed coolant system, changed thermostat, temperature sensor and checked all fan switches. Could this be dual fan relay problem? My concern is that car slowly almost reaches overheat guage red line at idle in traffic –probably since all fans are not operating when they should? . Any more ideas or is this normal operation?
Thanks

First you’ll need to know your temp gage is accurate.
Ok your primary fan isn’t coming on.
Connect a meter to the 222° stat.
Make sure it closes by 230°.
Just because it’s new doesn’t mean it’s good.
NEW stands for Never Ever Worked.
Technically it isn’t heating overheating based on your description of the gage.
But I don’t like to run that warm.
If you want to run cooler replace your stat 238° switch with one that closes at a lower temp.

When you see fog lights on in good weather beware. Low performance driver ahead. Right grandma?
How bout those nervous nellies too scared to drive without headlights on in the daytime or if there is a little rain!
