Summit/Northern Radiator

WTF? It doesn't eve fit. Compared to a copper rad (thicker than stock but it fits), a stocker and the summit one. The side tank is not the right shape, the rad sits off to the pass. side, it's too thick to fit on the stock rubbers, not a big issue but without any it still doesn't fit, it's too wide for the retainer plate. Gawddamnit....more fabrication needed. Unsure if I should cut the tank and weld it back up or leave it as is. The lower rad hose is awfully close to the front subframe. Direct fit my azz!! How did you all end up doing this? just putting it in like this?

Re: Summit/Northern Radiator

on my bottom rad support theres a lip, i cut it at both sides and bent it down to fit, but my rad is sidemount, so idk how you would make the rubbers work but the problem is the stock rad is real thin compared to a new high flow aluminum

Re: Summit/Northern Radiator

The brass one that was in there (in the pic) is about the same thickness as the aluminum one, the core is equally thick, the difference is the way the tanks are welded on and the side tank not having the correct profile on the alu one.

Re: Summit/Northern Radiator

i bought the exact same summit/northern radiator a
while back and though i have not test fit it in the car,
i did notice my fan shroud will not fit without mods and
the worse part was the tranny cooler was right smack
in front of the outlet hose fitting with only about 1/8
clearance(i just cut tank apart and removed cooler,
welded back up) Next time i have that area of car
apart,i will test fit and possibly install radiator using a
modified shroud or possibly fab up a new shroud/mount
other than the problems mentioned, looks like a really
nice radiator and about 3x the cooling capacity of the
one in my car now

Re: Summit/Northern Radiator

yeah, that radiator "fits" in the car, but not like stock, mods are required, but its a well made radiator. I ended up massaging the frame by the lower outlet to make more room for the hose. I ended up lowering the lower radiator support almost 3" and tucking the radiator under the upper support more and made a new upper mount out of aluminum. Works well, fits nice now

Re: Summit/Northern Radiator

Yep, not exactly a direct fit is it. If I had to do it over again I would have modified the drivers side tank to help make matters a little easier. Here is a link to my write up on how I installed the Summit Northern radiator in my car.

Old post but do you have pics of the radiator in the car?
I'm think about tucking it under the support too

Re: Summit/Northern Radiator

1989GTATransAms looks really great.
Old thread, but its up again so..........
I also had a little trouble getting the top of a radiator (not the one in this thread )under the top lip.
I used a piece of hard plastic that you can see between the stock radiator cap and the mounting point extending it enough to set where it should. The top hose sets in its spot and the cap holds the radiator nice and tight. No need to even use top brackets. I would think that the concept will work with any radiator that's close to fitting, for guys less fortunate when it comes to metal fabrication.

Re: Summit/Northern Radiator

Don't mean to bring back this old post, but how did this radiator perform compared to the stocker? Is the car running cooler?
