1992 RS fan help! Works sometimes and then doesn't???

Ok so the other day my fan worked fine. Then it doesn't. Sometimes it kicks on when the car starts to get hot and then sometimes it doesn't. Is it a fan relay? Or what? The t stat I replaced cause that was another issue. Any ideas?

I've read it could be a fan relay on the passenger side between the 6&8 spark plugs. Correct? Is there other sensors ? It's a single fan 305 tbi motor.

Does the fan come on when you switch the AC on ? Intermittent function sounds like a possible loose connection. The fan switch you refer to grounds out that wire when the temperature reaches a certain point and causes the fan relay over by the brake booster to send power to the fan. Complete description of the whole system can be found by going to the technical article section on this site and clicking on the single fan article under electrical. I've had the same problem and this helped. If grounding the wire that goes to the fan switch with key on runs the fan, switch is the problem. Good luck, Henry

Try 12 volts directly to the fan to see if that's the problem. If its Ok then check relay, etc.

what do you mean? Wire it stright to the battery or just run it to a power supply? If it works or doesn't what does it mean? If it spins it means relay and if not fan motor correct?

Unplug the two wire connector at the bottom of the fan. Connect two jumper wires to the battery. Positive to where the red wire went or the fan will spin backwards. If the fan doesn't work and go real fast replace it. Check and make sure all connections are solid and not causing the problem. Electrical stuff usually works or doesn't. Intermittent often is a bad connection.

The item between #6 and #8 plugs is the fan switch, NOT the relay. The relay is located driver side firewall, between brake booster and fender - there are 2 relays there, one is for fuel pump, other for fan - you can swap them as they are identical, and see if the fan works - but the fuel pump won't prime if that relay is bad - car will still start (takes a minute or two) and run - just won't prime.

When the fan switch gets hot enough, it makes a ground connection for the relay. You can pull the wire off the switch, ground it, and if the fan runs then you know fan motor is good.

A/C being turned on should also make the fan run constantly, regardless of engine temps - so I'm inclined to also think you may have a bad fan motor (unless the connectors on the top of the A/C compressor aren't plugged in all the way).

Thanks everyone! I got the fan working today. I switched the relay and it kicked on with the a/c on and I drove it and it kicked on so it's working
