Cooling fan temp switch, wiring.

I have searched and not found exactly what I am looking for so....

I am finishing restoring my TA (not been on the road for 7 years) and was wiring the fan switch. I did buy Hypertech switch (should go on at ~180 and of at ~160). The TA has no ECM (carburated, old school setup). The fan did go on with the old engine (with the old fan switch) and it had no ecm eather.

The + wire was wired already but I did wire the switch as it was a ground (-). I did try the fan and when I put a ground to that wire its goes on.

Then I started the engine and let it warm up. At 220 F I did turn it off, the fan had not even started.

I am going to install a manual switch tomorow but I would like the other switch to work also.

Is there something I did wire wrong or it the Hypertech switch broken?

Thanks, Jon H.

Re: Cooling fan temp switch, wiring.

I dont see the answer there, am I correct that the switch should give me a minus (-)?

Re: Cooling fan temp switch, wiring.

I've tried alot of those switches in the head - and I gave up - even the Hypertech switch I bought never lasted more than 2 months, so I wouldn't be surprised.

I went with an aftermarket fan controller from Flex-a-lite over 3 years ago, and never looked back. It's worked great, fully adjustable, provisions for A/C, dual fans, manual switches for on and off, fully adjustable temp control, easy wiring job. Probes the radiator, so no getting covered in coolant mesing with it. I highly recommend one! The factory style head switches are a PITA, and never work.

Re: Cooling fan temp switch, wiring.

When it reaches the set temp, it should provide a ground for the fan relay.

Re: Cooling fan temp switch, wiring.

Thank you all for your reply´s. I did put on a manual switch this morning and its working manually now. I dont know if there is a relay from the + (just used the existing wiring), how should a relay be wired if I have one?

Re: Cooling fan temp switch, wiring.

I did go for a drive the other day, and with the fan turn on (manually) the temp did rise to 230 (then I shut the engine of). I did loose a little transmisson fluid and am wondering if a heat in the transmission could be letting my engine be so warm.

I was also wondering if my dual snorkel system (the vacum part not connected) could be taking an air that should cool the radiator (I have a summit aluminum radiator and the Trans has an auxilary oil cooler and the one in the radiator also connected).

There was no harm, the transmission works and the engine didnt overheat, I just want to solve the problem before it comes to that.
