fan switch

87 trans am with 305 4brl runs too hot. Need to know how to adjust fan sensor which seems to be electronically confused. I just put a 160 thermostat in it, but fan won't turn on. It's a problem that shouldn't exist. Like everything else these days, being censored has caused us great difficulty...

Re: fan switch

Fan switch is on pass side head, between #6 and #8 plugs. There is no adjustment to it. You can replace it with a lowr temp switch (stock switch doesn't turn on fan until like 220 and off at 200 - high temps).

You can test to make sure the wiring is good by grounding the fan switch wire with key on - if wiring is good it will run. If it doesn't, check the fan relay, and check the fan itself by applying 12v and a ground directly to it.

Also, if you have A/C the fan would run with A/C switched on.

If you replace the switch, watch eyes for coolant - you'll get a face full.

I gave up on the stock-style switches, and installed a seperate fan controller 4+ years ago, and never went back. It's fully adjustable, has provisions for A/C, dual fans, manual on/off switches - easy to wire. Probes radiator so no more coolant drowning. Mine is a Flex-a-lite avail from Summit - I highly recommend them.

Re: fan switch

Thanks for the info. This is a little different than the 305 86 comaro I used to have. I'm not used to relying on electronics to turn my fan on when needed. I caught my car on fire a couple months ago because of something shorting out on the fire wall. It cost me $500. before I could drive it home. The mechanic said there were 3 sensors that control the cooling. I think I will get something that kicks in a little sooner and try to keep the temps down. There's too much that can go wrong with computerized cars and there's no way I can fix the problem myself if I'm out in the middle of nowhere. The reason I bought this car was so my wife and I can take some trips across the country and be able to fix any problem it might have inexpensively and fix it myself if I have to. Anyway, thanks. I'll take it from here and see what I can come up with that might be a little more reliable.
