AC retro-fit options for 87 IROC Camaro with headers?

Hello. I put a 383 SBC in my 87 IROC with Edelbrock smog headers and had to remove the AC box because of clearance issues. Now I need to get something in there as winter is coming and I have no heater motor/defrost. Are there any aftermarket AC systems that could replace the stock unit or do I need to get something from a non-AC car? I live outside Seattle, Wa so if I don't have AC it's not the end of the world but it would be nice to have for those 3 days a year that it get above 75'. Maybe there is some other options that I don't know about? Thanks for any help!

Get an under-dash unit.

It will allow you to move the evaporator, heater core, and blower to that area thereby creating space in the engine compartment.

Also, move the accumulator to the front of the car near the condenser for more space saving.

Check ThirdGen.org’s advertisers for those units.

If none are listed, we know a company.

Happy Racing!

How bout those too scared to drive without headlights in the daytime and the ones that need headlights for a little rain

Re: AC retro-fit options for 87 IROC Camaro with headers?

I've seen people on this board modify (Ie. cut and fiberglass etc.) the original AC box to allow it to clear. Just not sure how much would need to be removed in your situation. Otherwise you could get a hold of an AC delete box which typically go for ~$100 with the motor (which is different than the AC one).

The above mentioned unit would be nice as you would have AC as well an uncluttered engine bay. Just pointing out other options in case you need to go that route.

if you don't care about a/c, just get a non-a/c box & motor and install that in its place. you can reuse all your old control parts (including the blower motor resistor) and allow you to have heat without hacking anything up.

I've got the Hooker 2055's with A.I.R. pipes and factory AC. Yes, i've got some issues getting to the last two bolts and my spark plugs on that side, but they fit without any problems. I'd put the AC back in or go with the AC delete box.
