When i have a/c or defrost on car idles erraticlly when clutch fan engages. If i unplug clutch fan idles fine but i dont know what effect that will have on car and dont really know what the clutch fan does.

your talking about the a/c compressor, your a/c system is most likely low on freon, just unplug the compressor for the winter.
your fan is electric and mounted behind the radiator, you need it,leave it alone.

I understand what the radiator cooling fan is. I thought that the clutch in front of the compressor pulley was called a clutch fan. So what your saying is i can unplug the connector to it and it wont mess anything up just wont have a/c which i dont have any cold air anyway? Is it normal for the car to idle erratically when low on freeon and defrost is on?

yes just unplug it.it wont hurt anything.that is the a/c compressor and your just unplugging the the clutch.
the compressor takes a few hp to turn when the clutch is engaged.so at idle it drags the motor down, the ecm then adjusts the idle but if your system is low,the clutch will cycle on and off and make the idle speed go up and down and the ecm cant react fast enough,so you get a shitty idle.
gm engages the a/c compressor in defrost and a/c modes.yes thats all normal.
