Car running too hot while driving???
Car running too hot while driving???
I have both fans on, 180* thermo and do have the air dam under the rad. When i drive it for ~20mins, and if im driving 60+mph the car slowly starts to heat up, i haddn't had it get to the red zone but im preatty sure that if i drive it another 10mins @ 70mph it will probably ge to the red zone. Any suggestions
also had radiator flush not to long ago and is filled up with antifreeze (flow seems to be good). when im off the highway then the temp slowly drops lil less than 220*

Are the fans working on the highway? Are they pulling air thru the rad? Motor isnt running too lean at cruise?

Re: Car running too hot while driving???
there are two things you could do... one is open up the radiator cap in the morning.. using a baster suck up as much antifreeze as you can and then some after it begins to rise after the car begins to warm up... keep checking the upper rad hose ... it should get warm, thereafter, coolant should begin cycling, if that checks out and the antifreeze cycles, refill your rad with the coolant you removed... now check your timing and make sure it's where it's supposed to be at... I'm assuming you don't have any other problems except the warming issue... right?

Yup just it warms up after drving. What other signs could there be if my timing was off???

if you check your timing and adjust it to where it's suppose to be and the car runs like crap, you may be in need of a new timing set... I had trouble with my timing set, had to replace it twice, third time I bought a double roller...

you did mix the antifreeze 50/50 with water right? i had a buddy whos big block mopar kept overheating, and when i pulled the cap it was straight antifreeze! have to mix it or it wont cool properly-just my 2 cents

Re: Car running too hot while driving???
im not too familiar with the camaro but i know the firebirds require a sort of, "air dam" or an air scoop mounted on the bottom of the radiator cross member. I have the same problem and a quick inspection of several firebirds at the bone yard confirmed my suspicions. Im thinking about getting a piece of flashing, fold it in half and use self tapping screws to mount it. funny though, ive seen similar patch jobs at the bone yard aswell..

the thermostat traps the water in the radiator so that it can be cooled, if the water is not in the radiator long enough to cool, ye will surely overheat at an idle

Doh! didnt pay enough attention to the first post, although you may want to look at your air dam again, there is actually 3 pieces to it, 2 vertical and one horizantal, the vertical pieces direct air through the radiator and prevent it from slipping through the sides. Let me know if you have all this cause i may need to go in a different direction my self. Like i said i have the same problem
