temperature sender malfunction?

I have an 88 Iroc with dual coolant fans. The temp gauge is in the red and the fans do not come on.If I ground the ALDL with the key on the primary fan comes on.If I unground the ALDL, turn on the key and ground the green-white wire at the primary relay the primary fan turns on.Seems like everything is okay.If I ground the green-white wire at the secondary fan relay with the key on the secondary fan turns on.Seems like everything is okay there too.Could there be any other problem other than the fact the temp sender is shot and the engine is not as hot as the gauge says? Thank-you for any replies.

Re: temperature sender malfunction?

Sounds like you need a Coolant Temperature Sensor (located at the thermostat, black wire & yellow wire), and maybe a fan switch (located pass side head between #6 & #8 spark plug).

The CTS tells ECM the temp, then the ECM turns on primary fan.

The switch turns on secondary fan.

It's possible that it's not the switch itself. On mine, that plug is right next to the headers and it just fell apart due to age. You may also need to splice in a new plug. Easy enough to do at least.
