Does factory electric fan get 12V ??

Hey everyone. So I originally had a FI V6 2.8L.... now have a 1st gen carbureted 350 v8.

I am going to use my factory single v6 fan to cool the engine.. I am sure this has got to be plenty to cool it, and I know several people on this forum are doing the same..

But I have a question, I just burnt out the fan by directly connecting wires to the fan from the battery. At first it worked and worked just fine and blew nice.. But then I tried a second time accidentally switching the wires in revers and the thing did not move and just started smoking up. Now I burnt out the fan motor. Had to get a new motor for it just today..

I dont have the original connector to the fan, so does it have a resistor in it? or just get 12V. was it just because I reversed the wires which is why it blew?

I have one of those probe (needle looking) sensors that go into the radiator fins to signal the fan when to turn on and off.

Can I directly go power to the fan if it does run off of 12 v or do i need something to prevent it from voltage spikes?

Any help I would appreciate on how to wire this fan. Thanks

Re: Does factory electric fan get 12V ??

you blew up the diode in the fan motor when you
connected it backwards by accident-you can take the
motor apart and remove the shorted diode or just
replace the fan motor...
Not all GM fan motors have this diode-apparently the
diode is there to reduce arcing of the relay contacts
when the fan switches off

If you're using an aftermarket controller for the fan it should include wiring directions. Getting the fan connector with ample wiring attached from the JY may help, or if you don't have the time or access to one to do that I've got a spare connector with a couple of feet of wiring I'll sell you cheap. PM or email me for pics or other info if interested. I just installed an aftermarket fan controller and can help with my experience if that would help

Thanks you guys.
But do you know if the fan runs off of 12v consistently when on?

If I get a connector for the fan is it nothing special to it other than holding in place the 12 volt power and ground wire? like no resistor to lessen the voltage going to the fan

Re: Does factory electric fan get 12V ??

I have my single fan wired directly to 12v power off a switch. Battery is relocated to the rear and I have a 1/0 awg power wire coming from rear battery to distribution block under the hood, 2/0 awg to starter, and 2g from alt to battery. I cant remember if it was 12g or 16g from the dist. block to the on/off switch and fan. Either gauge should be OK. I should have it hooked up to a relay but this has been working fine for about 2 years now.

alright cool. now last question..

So I dont burn out the new motor, which terminal on the fan is positive and which is negative because I cannot tell, no markings on the motor and cannot see colors on wires in the motor. I attached a picture of it.

Correct it is only an easy way to connect the positive and negative terminals of the fan to the power source and ground

Looking at YOUR pic above - the positive is on the RIGHT side I THINK.... Should get a wire that is black with a red/stripe. The LEFT gets a solid black wire.

If you'd like to have a new connector for the fan motor, you can go to Advance, Autozone, etc. and special order a Dorman part number 85101. If they don't have it listed under the Dorman name, have them try the name Conduct-tite, same part number. Might be $5 and take 48 - 72 hours to get it.

Save this link ... anytime you need connectors look up the part number here, then try to order from Advance/Autozone/whatever:

The one on the right side gets the positive lead and the one on the left goes to ground
