coolant fan shorted?

I have a 1988 Iroc with dual coolant fans.Neither of them turn on.If I jumper the orange wire to the black-red wire on either relay with the relays disconnected I get a spark. In reality by doing this the fan should run but there is just a spark.I checked the wires and everything looks good.If I disconnect the connector at the fans I do not get a spark.Test light shows power to both connectors with no spark. The primary fan housing is magnetized and the secondary fan housing is slightly magnetized with no connectors hooked up.Could one or both fans be shorted causing neither of them to turn on.Thanks for any replies.

Re: coolant fan shorted?

I'd stick 12v directly to the fans and see if they turn. If they do, then you can rule out the fan motors.

I'd then check relays (each fan has one) - by supplying 12v to the 85 terminal and ground to the 86 terminal - if relay clicks, then the relay is good.

Then I'd check relay connectors for burns - might be a bad connector.

If all that fails, the primary is controlled by the Coolant Temp Sender located in intake by the thermostat housing. 2 wire plug, yellow and black.

Secondary is controlled by the fan switch, single wire mushroom looking plug in the pass side head (not block), between #6 & #8 spark plugs. If you ground the wire to the fan switch, the secondary fan should come on (assuming good relay and connector).
