I have a sound from the front portion of my engine and I think it may be my water pump.
I have a sound like someone is scratching their nails on a chalk board, its pretty loud at idle and sometimes goes away if I tap on the gas a little.
I DO NOT over heat, and have NOT lost any coolant(well, the level dropped very little in the past 2 years). I have a couple drops under the WP area on the ground if the car sits for 2-4 weeks without moving (the size of a quarter).
Is my WP on the way out?

My water pump was making a squealing noise plus my car was over heating. I changed the water pump and the squeal went away and my new pump cooled the car more efficiently.
Check your belts, they may need replacing.
If you do notice water under the pump its probably the pump leaking.
My water pump didn't leak any, but the squeal means that water is getting into the bearing and it will eventually fail.

Grab the longest screwdriver you can get - place plastic handle against ear, place metal tip at various points - the screwdriver will act as a stethescope and send the noise vibrations directly to your ear, helping you pinpoint the issue better.
JUST BE CAREFUL - I don't want to hear about you losing an eyeball or something!
