A/C System Removal

Hello all,

I'm new to the boards here, but from what I've read so far it seems that everyone has a wealth of knowledge that I could really use! I'm currently working on trying to get my 87 LT project car on the road. I'm swapping out the old 305 that it came with for a 350. Right now the motor is out of the car, so I would ideally like to remove the A/C system with all the extra space to work. I'm trying to remove the black box that the accumulator? is attached to. If I do this though is there going to be a hole in the firewall that I need to cover? Also, I would like to keep the parts in case I do sell the car one day and the next owner would like A/C. From what I've read though you need to cap the parts so they don't get ruined. If so, where could I get these caps. I tried doing a search for similar threads, but I couldn't find the exact answers I needed. If there is already a thread if someone could post a link to it, it would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: A/C System Removal

I think you just need to keep dust/dirt from getting inside the parts. They will get moisture inside regardless of what you do (they already have). That's why you have to vacuum an empty A/C system before refilling with the gases - to remove the moisture and to create a vacuum space for the new gases to fill.

If you remove the large box on the firewall - that contains the blower motor, and yes there will be a hole there. You'll definitely want to cover it to keep bugs, debris, etc. out of the cars interior.

But also note - no blower box also equals no heat (since you have no blower motor to blow air across the heater core) - so if you want heat, you need to leave the blower box in tact, or else replace it with an A/C delete blower motor and box.

Re: A/C System Removal

Thanks for the response. Thats what I needed to know. I would like to keep the heat functional, although this will most likely be a summer cruiser so it won't be needed that much. I'll have to look into getting a delete box.
