what is a good water pump for an 85 T/A?

Hi,
Going to be putting in a new cam, intake, and timing chain on my 350 in my 85 T/A. What water pump should I use? And, is there a preference on timing chain sets?

Thanks!

A new water pump would be good. An AC Delco if you want an original type. They sell aftermarket aluminum ones which are lighter and look better but that's all your decision. Timing chain wise a roller chain would be best. A single roller has bigger rollers on it and will work fine, or you can run a good doube roller but either or is fine. Just get a high quality piece from Cloyes, Comp Cams, etc. and you'll be okay. Good luck

I've installed the Cloyes double roller in many small block Chevys and they have worked very well and seem to hold up over time. Probably the only more reliable cam drive is a gear drive and I hate the whining. Belt drives are okay for racing but not reliable on the street.

I installed my Edelbrock Victor waterpump 12 years ago. It's a high flow unit that flows 25% over the stock pump, plus it's lightweight aluminum. I am very happy with it.

Thanks for the helpful advice guys!

Would I want the 'long' or 'short' water pump?

And, do I have to drop the oil pan to do the timing cover or is there a way around that fiascle? ;-)

Long pump, standard rotation if you have V belts, reverse rotation if you have serpentine.

You have to at least drop the front of the oil pan to do the timing cover.

Yeah you dont have to drop the whole oil pan you can drop the front a little, basically by removing the front bolts, and kind of prying it in and out. use the rubber and some RTV black silicone, then you kind of slide it back in and bolt her up.

How many of the front bolts do I need to loosen on the oil pan? And do I need to buy an oilpan gasket kit or will the gasket for the front of the pan come with the timing cover?

THanks a bunch!

There seems to be alot of Cloyes timing chain sets. Is there one in particular I should be looking at for this 350?

Are the Lunati chain sets good? Putting in a Lunati bracket master II (#00017) cam I think.
