383 stroker 080 over overheating

Hey guys,

About 8 months ago I purchased an 84 camaro with a 383 stroker motor and bored 80 over. Ive done so much research on what temp I should be running at and every time I do I always see "185" or "205" is too hot. I sit there and laugh thinking seriously? These people think that's hot? Im running at about 220 and that's when I'm driving at 40mph, when I stop I get up to about 230 or 240. Now Ive also been told by my machine shop (the name is 2nd Opinion Auto Center) that 220 is not hot at all for it being bored 80 over and it would more be in the 250+ temp range. Currently I'm not running a t-stat only because my previous head had a crack in the exhaust port causing coolant to leave at certain temps but I've replaced it and now everything runs perfectly (knock on wood). I'm running off a stock water pump from AutoZone and a new radiator with an electric fan. The radiator is just stock size and my timing is correct. I don't have a overheating issue, I'm just wondering if 220-240 temp is normal for a 383 stroker bored 080 over. From what I've read most machine shops wont even go over 080 over and It was already done when I bought the vehicle. Tonight I'm going to put t-stat in and see if it lowers my temp, hopefully you guys can help!!!

Oh and I don't have a shroud and my exhaust pipes are wrapped and I have an aftermarket temp gauge (obviously since the blocks casting numbers come up as the year: 1969-1979)

Just curious as to what block you are running and are you sure it is .080" over bored.

Re: 383 stroker 080 over overheating

For one thing a 350 bored .080" is going to run hotter. Another is a .080" overbore is a lot for a 350 block. Are you sure it does not say .030" on the piston. The 3 & 8 may are very close in shape.

So if it is a .080" overbore what stroke crankshaft are you running to maintain a 383" displacement? Most are .030" over with a 3.750" crankshaft.

That motor will run hotter than stock. 220 is fine but 240 is a bit on the high side.

You would benefit from a aluminum core radiator, preferably 3 core. And a fan that pulls more cfm. Or a better shroud.

Stock equipment isn't going to keep this one cool.

It's for sure bored 80 over, I'll post pictures of the stamp when I get on my computer, I'm on my iPhone for now. I didn't build the engine so I don't have all the specs on engine. I put the t-stat I'n and now it doesn't go past 230 when I'm stopped for more than 10 min.

Re: 383 stroker 080 over overheating

A 350 with a .080 overbore is going to run hotter. Taking that much material out of the cylinder walls means that the cooling system needs to be beefed up to transfer the heat from the combustion process.

Blackbmagic said it, you need a larger, more efficent, radiator and at least dual fans (perferrebly in a shroud) that pull some good CFM (3000cfm per fan would be ideal). You might want to look into a highflow stat and a high flow water pump from Summit or Edelbrock.

Wow - thought that after a 60 overbore it was time for a new block!

Re: 383 stroker 080 over overheating

What he said. Ive got a 350 bored 60 over with a 3.75" crank (which is 388 cu in). If I ever have to bore the block again, Im just gonna replace the thing. An 80 overbore is just too much.

Re: 383 stroker 080 over overheating

It's running too hot, my 385 motor (040 bore) runs at 180-185 all day long. Sure your motor run @ 220-240, but this is not good for longevity or power. 080 is not good. You should be running a t-stat and a larger radiator it would help solve your problem ...

Re: 383 stroker 080 over overheating

champions Aluminum 3 core radiator, $250 shipped, 2 16" electric fans at 3,000cfm, shouldnt have a problem.

Although am only .30 over the car never sees above 180 in New Jersey's 100 degree humidity weather, 165 cruising 30mph or above.

Noone mentioned the air dam, do you have one installed? silly question but someone needed to ask
