New Engine Running Hot

Hello,

I own a 91 camaro with a rebuilt sbc 350. The engine has an edelbrock carb with electric choke and a 700r4 trans. I have noticed that when I get the car up around 2300+ RPM's it begins to overheat and sail up past 230 if I let it. This is with the electric fan going and thermostat removed as well. Not sure if it is related but I also noticed that the new coolant I just put in looks extremely dirty and has lots of tiny black particles floating around in it. I don't seem to have any other symptoms of a blown gasket, so I am at a loss here.

Oh, and the water pump is brand new and the air dam is intact. The radiator is a 2 core that was on the car when I bought it. No idea how old it is. I am scared to drive it because I just got it running and don't want to mess something up. Help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: New Engine Running Hot

Put a thermostat back in(water could be moving thru the radiator to fast to cool it) and make sure the lower hose has a spring in it, if they don't they can collapse.

Re: New Engine Running Hot

I removed the thermostat due to trying to get it cooler. it was running hot with it in, now it is slightly cooler. The thermostat was new as well. The hose is not collapsing, I've checked. I don't know what it could be.

What degree t stat? And it being new doesn't mean its working.

If you let it idle till its warn does it begin to run hot at idle too?

No, it seems to be ok at idle. 160 degree stat. The upper hose got hot and fluid was moving through it when I had it in so pretty sure it works.

Re: New Engine Running Hot

The lower hose would only collapse when it's running at highway speeds not at idle or flinging the throttle, if it is collapsing at all.
