Issues with coolant temp sensor
Issues with coolant temp sensor
So about two months ago my fans quit working. After checking the wires i followed my way to the sensor that lies under the exhaust manifold into the block. After getting it out the sensor promptly crumbled in my hand. So that was my issue at the time. Replace'n it, i've come across the same problem. Just an hour ago my fans quit working again and i checked the sensor. It's completely melted and does not work anymore.
Does anybody have an idea of what to do with this? It just seems to get too hot, and the plastic on it melts. When i put the new sensor in two months ago, I had covered it in fire tape along with the wires leaving to the fan. Not sure if anybody else has had this issue, but i'm stumped. I can't really think of what would work now, and I'll have to put aside money for another sensor two months down the road if this keeps up.
Thanks!

Re: Issues with coolant temp sensor
is the sensor in the head, or lower in the block itself?
Re: Issues with coolant temp sensor
It's in the block itself, towards the bottom under the exhaust manifold.
Edit: Sorry, my fault. I wasn't thinking when i was looking at the question. It's in the head. I'm in the process of putting in a new sensor now. Not sure what else i can do to prevent it from melting like last time.

Re: Issues with coolant temp sensor
the sensor in the block is the knock sensor, not the fan switch. the fan switch should be in the head.
Re: Issues with coolant temp sensor
I edited my last post. But just put on the sensor and used some heat tape to cover the whole sensor. Came up from under the car so i was able to wrap it better this time. Not sure what else i could do

Your coolant temp. sensor is located in the front of the engine if it's a 5.0 or a 5.7,behind the pulley. What engine do you have??

Re: Issues with coolant temp sensor
coolant temp sensor is for the ecm and is located in the intake. depending on the year, the ecm may or may not control the fan. but if the ecm cant see the coolant temp it should be throwing a code. if the ecm doesnt control the fan, its controlled by a fan switch on the passanger suide head that looks nearly identical to the knock sensor.
